Creature Feature – Journey into the world beneath Avalonia and meet some of the terrifying, slimy, gassy ¬– and sometimes cute – creatures that inhabit this Strange World. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio' Wins Five Trophies Including the Top Prize at the 50th Annie Awards". However, it was a streaming hit on Disney+, where it became the number one film being streamed for 19 days.

The characterisations are really undercooked and just about every box you can imagine is ticked as the story ultimately concludes with a bit of a nod to Oriental mythology. That might be an interesting dynamic to explore in a different movie, but Strange World has a cooler story with higher, more pressing stakes going on, and a limited run time to let it play out. Zootopia and Wreck-It Ralph were beloved, sure, but there’s also the whole gamut of early-2000s misfires that only became popular years after their release. The inclusion of Young-White voicing a gay character named Ethan marks Walt Disney Animation Studios' first openly LGBTQ main character.

Great as the people and places they explore may be, however, the relatively unimaginative story consigns this gorgeous toon to second-tier status . The feature film introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. The film stars the voices of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu. The Clade family struggle is a stumbling block that boils down to men who have bad relationships with their fathers, fight to avoid going down similar paths, and in doing so, become the very things they sought to dodge. Directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, who previously worked together on Raya and the Last Dragon, this new Disney movie is an absolutely gorgeous genre fest that gets bogged down by clichéd family drama.Tagging along is his teenage son Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White), who secretly dreams of being an explorer. Strange World takes place in the fantasy land of Avalonia, which is surrounded on all sides by impenetrably high mountains. The last fifteen minutes or so do redeem this to a certain extent, but otherwise it is a curiously disjointed story that seems drawn from "Island at the Top of the World" (1974) with bits of "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" (1959) and "The Lost World" (1960) thrown in for good measure. According to Hall, Strange World is a nod to pulp magazines—popular fiction from the first half of the 20th century that was printed on inexpensive wood pulp paper, including films like Journey to the Center of the Earth, Fantastic Voyage and King Kong.

From its lush palette to its cute and deadly flora and fauna, this strange, mysterious world is very much deserving of its status as the film's title character. He has visited Disney Parks around the globe and has a vast collection of Disney movies and collectibles. Strange World brings a story that features themes of Acceptance, the family unit, representation and environmentalism. To communicate non-verbally, several animators worked to create the movement of the character Splat. The movies characters are also hard to take seriously because some side characters are just there and one certain main character is initially just there and is all of a sudden the main villain without realizing it and then they sympathize with the main characters in the end pretty much making me lose all interest in this film.Rafael Motamayor of /Film said "Though the upbeat song and the focus on laughs kind of sells this as a more formulaic Disney film in terms of tone, the prominent use of monsters and big action hopefully makes this more of an inventive film from the studio. Shortly after the announcement with Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) at the D23 Expo in August 2019, a major redone happened, with the creative leadership on the film were being swapped, while some cast members were replaced.

While finishing co-directing Moana (2016), Don Hall began to developed the idea for the new film in 2017 about strange projects, with his frequent creative partner Chris Williams, before ultimately left Disney in November 2018 and directed The Sea Beast for Netflix Animation.

Inspired by classic adventure stories," said director Don Hall, ''‘Strange World' is an original animated adventure/comedy about three generations of the Clade family who overcome their differences while exploring a strange, wondrous and oftentimes hostile world. Those father-son dynamics seem like they were supposed to anchor the movie in some reality, but all they do is drag Strange World down when it could’ve soared.
