Fertilization: Fertilize your Photinia Red Robin in the spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and foliage color. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application. There are several species to choose from, offering colourful seasonal foliage displays, clusters of small white flowers and red berries. They suit many styles of garden, either formal or informal, large or small, and can be grown as specimen trees or shrubs, hedgesand wall shrubs. The most widely grown photinia is P. × fraseri 'Red Robin', which is an evergreen shrub notable for its rich red young leaves. If you have planted large root balled hedging, if your water conditions are correct, it may be the plant reacting to its change of environment and is under a little stress, but once it gets going it should be ok. The plant is generally under stress if the foliage has purple/brown spotting. A cold winter may also cause a more mature plant to be stressed. Hunger:

Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. These plants can adapt to a range of soil types but prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil with good drainage. HS)Girth 10-12cm : Half Standard,35-50L pot, around 80-100cm clear trunk and head *40-80cm wide and tall. Another benefit of these pots is that the slots facilitate good drainage all around the pot, and this is particularly important if you wanted to use the pots for hardwood cutting propagation. The ground should be clean and free from weeds and grass. This gives the new plants a good chance to get established. If the area you are going to plant them in has grass or weeds, the ground should be sprayed off a week or so before planting to avoid any competition. To help prevent too many weeds appearing after you have planted your hedge, I find it a good idea to put your grass clippings or mulch around the plants as this smothers out the weeds and helps prevent the plants drying out. P. serratifolia Pink Crispy– bright pink young leaves that are later marbled light and dark green. White flowers in summer, followed by small red fruits. Feathered tree: Branches from the bottom of the trunk all the way up. These branches can be removed if a clear stem is required. Leaf spot – purple-brown spotting on foliage is a sign the plant is under stress, often due to cold, wet winters. Recently planted large specimens are particularly prone, as they take longer to establish than younger plants October 2015: Photinia Red Robin trees are great, thank you, very impressed with the quality and perfect for what I need them for.

Larger plants won’t need to be planted as close, but how close will depend on how soon you want your hedge to look full. Preparation before planting Flowers: In late spring to early summer, Photinia Red Robin produces small, creamy-white flowers in clusters. While the individual flowers are not particularly showy, they can attract pollinators. Photinia Robusta, sometimes also known as Robusta Compacta, has a tighter more compact habit than the ubiquitous Photinia Red Robin. Where to growPhotinia is a large evergreen shrub which will also make a small tree of up to about 6m (20ft). It has become a popular garden plant mainly due to its shiny red new growth which appears in April, An added attraction is that when mature it produces a display of frothy heads of pink tinged flowers. The Red Robin is hardy and will endure frost conditions down to -8°C. It thrives well in fertile, well drained soil. To achieve the best leaf colour and the most flowers, plant in full sun with some shelter. Red Robin in pots can be planted all year round and can be any size, from a plant in a 9cm pot to a plant in a large tub. Their root is settled into the pot and the plant has been actively growing in the pot thus it is well established. A plant in a pot can be sown all year round. As it is established in the pot, there is little disturbance to the plant when planted into the ground so it is more likely to grow. It is seldom that a plant in a pot fails unless the watering conditions haven’t been correct. It will need to be watered in well when initially planted. If planted during a hot time or in the summer, it may need to be watered a few times a week until they get established in the ground. Root balled:

Planting & Growing Photinia Photinias are amongst the most popular trees and shrubs at Paramount. We have many types, forms and varieties for Photinia for sale. These include Photinia Red Robin Espalliered and Photinia Red Robin Topiaryand Photinia Hedging Shrubs. When grown as a hedge, remove the tips of young shoots to encourage the bright red leafy re-growth. Itcan be trimmed up to three times a yearRed Robin trees can be pruned hard at any time without damage as they are considered the Rambo equivalent of trees. This is one of the reasons why it has been awarded the RHS Award Of Garden Merit. We strongly advise you to prune hard for at least the next couple of seasons for trees below 2m or 4 years old. This will force your Red Robin to bush out even more. This will also ensure that older growth is not long and spindly which would make it prone to snow loading and wind damage. Your Red Robin tree may turn up looking scalped, this is because we have hard pruned it for you. Prune up to three times a year making the last one around August to ensure new growth is not subjected to cold and frosts. Red Robin’ has glossy evergreen leaves all year round, and rich red new foliage. It also produces a froth of small cream flowers from late spring. Once established, this shrub will grow fast, but regular clipping can keep it down to size and also stimulate colourful new shoots. A smaller version called 'Little Red Robin' grows to about 1.5m (5ft) tall. We don’t sell Red Robin bare rooted at the moment as we feel they are better coming from a pot or root wrapped as there more likely to grow into a stronger plant and less chance of the plant dying. Planting tips Distance apart: If you have a more established hedge, and the hedge appears to look dull, the ground may be water logged. Red Robin doesn’t like sitting in water for a long period of time. Stress: Should you require a specific delivery date, let us know in advance and we will arrange for your delivery to arrive on your required date.
