However, along with her courage and talent and happy enduring personal a professional relationship with Chris Stein, her perseverance paid off. It's like she's going along remembering various events of her life that were especially significant, or indeed rather hairy and shocking, filling in with relevant background details in a very open and honest way. We are torn between instinctiveness and sensuality on one side, and, on the other, in its opposite, in rationality of which man is only capable to a certain limit.

She has become and still remains a true national treasure, one whose influence continues to impact the worlds of music, fashion and art. But by the second full day of audio, her tone seemed flat and impersonal with little or no emotion or inflection. As a lifelong fan of Debbie Harry and Blondie, I was so excited when I heard about the book and it was top of my Christmas list.

There are books that chronicle those times better ( Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk by Legs McNeil, Gillian McCain) but hey, it's Debbie Harry - nice to read her perspective of her journey and learn of how some of the band's top hits and records were created. Harry joined and left various bands including the Stilettos, through which she met Chris Stein, who would become her principal collaborator as the guitarist in Blondie, her partner for the next 13 years and, after their split, one of her dearest friends. I wasn't submissive or begging him to come back, I was kicking his ass, kicking him out, kicking my own ass too. None of those intimacies are here and I’m wondering if perhaps Debbie was not really all that interested in giving us a prolonged peek behind the curtain, which leads me to believe that she may have been better off going with an authorized biography instead. While on tour with Iggy Pop and David Bowie, the latter flashes his penis at Harry in the dressing room “as if I were the official cock checker or something”. In medio stat virtus" or in a 3rd way independent of these extremes, spirituality: irrational and unsensible? It may be the case, as Harry notes, that some of the Early Era was a blur because the band was so busy. She’s also pretty reserved about her personal life – she doesn’t go into any detail about her breakup with Chris Stein and doesn’t talk much about who may have replaced him.

While playing a series of shows in LA, she and Stein are invited to meet Phil Spector at his mansion. It's reconstructed from a series of interviews she did to reconstruct her memories, so it's a bit jangly and jumpy, but not overly so.
