I told my wife I could recite the names of all of the Kings and Queens of England from William the Conqueror to Elizabeth II and she said "yes, but please don't! The other thing that I was especially struck by in the course of this reading was the realization of how deeply embedded within the English tradition is respect for the rule of law, which has obvious bearing upon a solid understanding of American history as an extension of English history. Story being the essence of history (of good history, at any rate), this collection of biographical essays chronicling the lives of each of England's rulers (post 1066 - pre Norman monarchs are not dealt with here) makes for a very engaging and illuminating tour of English history as a whole.

Each monarch is profiled and the impact of his or her rule on wider English history is described and analyzed. Truth really is more exciting than fiction in this dramatic, real-life adventure showcasing the bravery, compassion and military prowess of a young Rani during the Indian uprising of 1857.Ian Crofton provides a similar directory in, “Kings and Queens of England: The Lives and Reigns of the Monarchs of England”. Discover Henry’s life as a young prince at Tudor court, the religious conflicts of his reign, the fates of each of his six wives and his lasting legacy as one of England’s most famous kings. The Danish rulers, such as Cnut, were highly influential in the development of what would eventually become England and Britain, and their lives and those of their various family members should not be discounted. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. A beautifully illustrated full-colour tribute to King Charles III, published to mark his coronation – from the bestselling creators of There Once Is a Queen.

On a positive note, Crofton smoothly presents the transition of ultimate monarchism to the ceremonial role it holds today; helping the reader understand the modern-day impact of their role. From the Nation’s Favourite Storyteller Sir Michael Morpurgo comes a poetic celebration of our new monarch, King Charles III, beautifully illustrated in watercolour by acclaimed artist Michael Foreman.Though I do have to give credit for the author of the section on the Hanovers - it was better than other references I've read. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Meanwhile, a little girl is wondering what knickers Her Majesty will choose to wear on a school visit!

They are lively tales - complete with Viking raids, family betrayals and a rich history of Norwegian influences upon the growing country. Horrible Histories has been entertaining children and families for generations with books, TV, stage show, magazines, games and 2019’s brilliantly funny Horrible Histories: the Movie – Rotten Romans. Almost always a war going on, and some kings felt obliged to lead their armies or at least make that illusion. But as with any drama, the minor players often manage to steal the show: Robert Curthose, The Empress Matilda, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Edward the Black Prince, John of Gaunt, and Warwick “The Kingmaker,” to name a few standouts.

This expansive history offers elegant portraits of the 59 English monarchs who have held the throne, from such noted figures as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I to lesser-known sovereigns such as Æthelred the Unready and Cnut. Bullet point time lines on the edge of page along with imagery allows you to get at least a feel for each reign. The term ‘brief’ is not an exaggeration as the issue with “Kings and Queens of England” is that it is much too summarized and simplified. It's interesting that all of the current queen's children ended up in divorce which suggests that arranged marriages or pressure from parents on way or the other is never a good idea. The Kings and Queens of England is the perfect choice for anyone looking for an illustrated account of the English monarchy from the Anglo-Saxon era to the present. This gloriously imaginative tale from Carnegie Medal nominee Sam Gayton is the perfect book for readers curled up by the fire, ready to be transported to a fantastical kingdom. This quirky tale about the longest reigning monarch in British history is as fun as it is authentic, and the book includes a picture of the actual bathing machine Prince Albert created. The book begins by charting Celtic Britain before the Roman invasion to the Norman Conquest of 1066: the establishment of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the coming of Christianity and the unification of England.
