There are messages about frank communication in a relationship, and how important it is to talk about things that bother us. I wanted to go with someone who made my breath catch and my heart flutter, but who was even left in the school that I hadn’t already considered? Coppola lets the story take its time, pushing many of the events of the novel to the arguably even-better sequel, and spending three hours on building tension toward stylish, explosive violence.

Overall, I still really enjoyed this book, so judge for yourself how much such a thing would bother you. Painter hit all the right notes of cringey teenage drama, confusing feelings about relationships and growing up, and the sweetness of first loves. Their chemistry ignited one of the great Hollywood love stories, on and off-screen, and makes this a rare pseudo-noir with a happy ending. Van Morrison’s voice made swimming upstream in the busy hallway seem like it was a scene from a movie, as opposed to the royal pain that it actually was. She imagines her life playing out like one as much so that she even creates soundtracks to go with her experiences.Senior pictures, homecoming, college applications, prom, graduation; as everyone I knew got excited about those high school benchmarks, I got stress headaches because nothing felt the way I’d planned for it to feel. After Liz and Wes almost crash Wes’s car in the rain, Liz decides to kiss him, and he kisses her back.

The obvious comfort she has with Wes over the awkwardness and often embarrassing moments that populate her attempts to connect with Michael force her to reassess her ideas of what romance looks like – and what a relationship looks like. Perfect for fans of Kasie West and Jenn Bennett, this “sweet and funny” (Kerry Winfrey, author of Waiting for Tom Hanks) teen rom-com follows a hopelessly romantic teen girl and her cute yet obnoxious neighbor as they scheme to get her noticed by her untouchable crush. This YA Romance follows Liz, a girl who lost her mom sadly some years prior, and that has to deal with that grief every day.The mind-bending plot shares a lot in common with Dick’s novel, but the atmosphere, and particularly Rutger Hauer’s charismatic blond droid Roy Batty, cemented Blade Runner’s legacy as the parent of all cyberpunk films that would follow, though few would be quite as prophetic. Her extensive knowledge and love of romantic comedies was so endearing, as was her slightly misguided attempt to secure her own happy ending by fake dating her neighbor in an effort to get Michael’s attention. Painter throws them all into the mix, but they feel fresh, because she makes us care— and oh boy, did I care about what was going to happen to these characters!

But while Wes and the Potters had enjoyed things like flinging mud into my hair because it made me scream, Michael had been doing things like identifying leaves, reading thick books, and not joining in on their torture. Yes, the cinematic Jack Torrance’s fate is no tragedy, however neither is how the film adds a greater degree of ambiguity (and therefore menace) to the Overlook Hotel’s reign of evil in the American Rockies. To Have and Have Not, Hemingway’s second novel and the biggest “bunch of junk” Hawks thought his buddy ever put to paper. But this is obviously a mother-daughter activity and it would be natural that Liz would feel like she was missing something.

I love all things autumnal and baking year-round, plus I adore cats with a passion (because who doesn't?

Clearly the cosmos had known Michael would be appearing before me that day, so it had done everything in its power to make me presentable. His performance is also just absurd enough to better accentuate the satirical elements of the novel and maybe add some texture to Bateman’s internal black void. I tucked the lipstick back into my bag, replaced my headphones, and exited the restroom, hitting play and letting the rest of the Bridget Jones soundtrack wrap itself around my psyche. Liz is determined to make Michael into the rom-com hero of her love life; she believes this would make her mother proud. Michael is a fan of The Duke and I by Julia Quinn, on which the first season of Bridgerton is based.

It was the first summer movie blockbuster that maintained the intelligence of the novel while jettisoning its bad ideas.
