Description

For this first wash, you can wash multiple garments together, as long as they have been dyed with similar colors. If you wash too many colors together in the same load, the garments can come out muddy looking. People are drawn to colors differently and what appeals to one person may not appeal to you. So there are no best tie-dye combinations or bad ones. Just popular ones. For tie-dyers looking for more color options or a more professional quality dye, I recommend ProcionMX dyes from Jacquard or Dharma Trading Co. Dye colors are basically a reflection of the different wavelengths of light. Light consists of these different colors but our eyes can only perceive a fraction of the spectrum from a surface.

Lay the shirt flat on a table. Pinch a small section of fabric at the center of the shirt. (If you want the bullseye to be off-center, choose a small section off-center.) When tie-dying, the dyes tend to overlap sections. There’s astounding beauty in this, but also a great risk of ruining the design you envisioned if the colors don’t blend beautifully. First, leaving the rubber bands or ties on, rinse the garment under cold running water. Then, continue rinsing in cool/lukewarm water while you remove the rubber bands or ties. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Then, run the garments through a complete warm/hot washing machine cycle with Synthrapol detergent. Running stitches are used to stitch on the fabric. When you take out the fabric after dyeing you will find beautiful patterns in the shape of the stitched thread. These diamond shaped patterns can be made in a random pattern or in a way resulting in them forming a motif. Sometimes, if the T-shirt is too dark, you will get a brownish-red color after bleaching. If you want the color to be even lighter, you can apply another round of bleach on those same areas to get a grayish-yellow color.
