Visit the Portobello Swim Centre: If it’s too cold for a swim in the sea, head over to the Portobello Swim Centre. It features an indoor Victorian pool and a Turkish bath, and as it’s run by the council the prices are very reasonable. Things to Do Nearby The Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club offers lessons and equipment rentals for those interested in exploring the waters of the Firth of Forth, while families with young children can make use of the nearby Straiton Place play park and Portobello Swim Centre swimming pool. Up the coast from Dundee you’ll find the popular seaside town of Arbroath. It’s a popular place for people looking for a holiday in Scotland with gorgeous views, a great beach and plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

Sun, sea, sand and ice cream. On a warm day in Scotland, you could be forgiven for forgetting you’re standing at Edinburgh’s seaside and not at the Costa Del Sol!Once at Portobello Beach you’ll find a wide and sandy coastline that’s perfect for sunbathing and swimming as well as enjoying leisurely strolls along the Victorian promenade which is lined with cafes, amusement arcades, and pubs. The area around Portobello Beach also has several parks and green spaces such as Rosefield Park and Figgate Park which both have children’s play parks, while Portobello itself hosts several events and festivals throughout the year such as the annual Big Beach Busk and the Portobello Village Show. Those visitors looking for a mini seaside day out won’t have to go much further than the middle of the Portobello seafront. You’ll find Longniddry Bents by following the A198 towards Gosford House which is a beautiful neoclassical manor house with extensive grounds that are open to the public at no cost.

The two best places to eat on the promenade (in my opinion) are The Espy and The Beach House which are located next to each other. The Espy is a pub with a restaurant which serves massive portions of food while The Beach House is a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Silverknowes and Cramond beaches lie 4(ish) miles northwest of the city centre where they overlook the Firth of Forth and the coastline of Fife. The centre provides swimming lessons, fitness classes, and leisurely swim sessions, making it an ideal destination for health-conscious visitors and families seeking fun-filled swimming experiences.

The Seaside Award-winning beach draws large crowds in good weather and, along with the promenade, hosts a number of popular events, including the annual Big Beach Busk, international volleyball competitions and triathlon events.

As Edinburgh and the surrounding areas became more gentrified in the late 18th century, Friggate Muir changed its name to ‘Portobello’ and started to transform into a seaside resort for the wealthy residents of Edinburgh who sought a quiet retreat away from the bustling city.

Musselburgh Beach is a lovely coastal area on the edge of the town of Musselburgh, just 5 miles (8 km) to the east of Edinburgh city centre. This area makes a good base for exploring the many miles of golden sands, not to mention several world-class golf courses, such as Gullane Golf Club, which dot the coast. Yellowcraigs Edinburgh The highest point in the park is Arthur’s Seat which is a long-extinct volcanic plug that offers stunning views across Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside. Popular areas to visit in the park include Salisbury Crags and Duddingston Loch. With tonic I’d pair it with either Fever-Tree Mediterranean or a classic Indian such as Franklin & Sons or Fever-Tree. The distiller’s recommended garnish of orange peel is where I’d go too, enhancing the citrus in the gin. If you want something a little sweeter, a wedge works well too. So if a day at the beach is on your list this summer, let us help you out with a few of our favourites: ArbroathThe construction of elegant Georgian and Victorian villas along the coastline contributed to the area’s growing reputation as a fashionable place to visit, and before long it became one of Scotland’s premier Victorian holiday destinations featuring a Lido (a type of outdoor pool), one of the UK’s first Turkish baths, and a 2-mile promenade that’s as popular today as it was when it was originally built in 1866. The park features a leisure complex with a swimming pool, a golf course, and hundreds of static caravans that are available for rent, making it one of the most popular summertime destinations in East Lothian, especially as Seton Sands Beach is literally on the other side of the main entrance. Newhailes Estate is a stunning 18th-century Palladian villa set amidst 84 acres of picturesque gardens and woodlands. Owned by the National Trust for Scotland, this historic estate offers a glimpse into Scotland’s past with a house that features preserved interiors, elegant architecture, and beautifully maintained grounds.
