Description

The exams are finally over, the sun is shining and celebration is in the air. For twins Chloe and Alex the future looks bright, if a bit uncertain. But turbulence is not far from the horizon and begins when Alex is in a car crash on the way home from a drinking binge with friends The story itself is a bit light and fluffy. Easy reading for a summer afternoon at the lake or a rainy day inside. The characters were generally believable, and their personal struggles are engaging. There's even some inclusion of First Nations culture, which is a key sector of the Cariboo demographic. This book is a wonderful and articulate summary of many writings and views on the conundrum of the privileged mother who knows she cannot have it all, if "ït all" includes being as present a mother and wife as she feels she needs to be.

Erica Maity narrated. I have to say it was fantastic. From pacing to tone, she captured the essence of the story and helped build on the scenes and suspense. Her character voices were flawless, and she added another level of enjoyment to this thriller. The novel is very character driven, the whole plot centers around Julie moving on and her daughter, Darla, encouraging her to move. Virgil Blue is the mysterious dude who silently leads her to the path of forgiveness, who has had a tragic past. The author, Donna Milner, is courageous in allowing this silence rather than filling it with activity. And one could say the couple is courageous in being with what is. The land, and the couple's silence, hold much more than first seen. One night the sky appears "like an electrical charged curtain" with the aurora borealis, the northern lights.

I’d like to start off by saying that I am a tremendous fan of the author. Her first two books blew me away with her exceptional and brilliant story telling ability. This also applies to Somewhere In Between in regards to her skills as an author. And I can’t say enough about the narration by Erica Maity. It was flawless perfection! While Darla sounds like a sassy teenager and refers to herself as a "dead white girl," she realizes she can't move on until everyone she loves lets her go. Vlahos’scompassionate, beautifully written book contains profound wisdom. It is for anyone with an open heart who loves a good story and anyone who fears but would like to better understand hospice and the end of life.” —Katy Butler, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Dying Well Despite it all though the one responsible for her death remains a mystery, glimpses of hidden hate within the characters belying an ending that tears the heart out and leaves it in tatters. Hosmer's ability to touch on real family drama and what one will endure for the sake of their children, paints life into these ordinary people who could live down the street from any one of us. Here is a novel that I received for review by Caitlin Press. This review will also be on the blog tour for this novel, so welcome aboard! I will put the synopsis here, then I will talk about it because this is what this is for:

Was I murdered? Did I commit suicide? I don’t know if I’m in some sort of purgatory or if I’ve gone straight to hell. Pseudo-punk Magnolia and underachieving gamer-geek Rom are two unlikely friends who only hang out during their walks home together after school. When they find the a portal that leads to different worlds, they use the “in-between place” as an escape from their lives in high school, then later, after college.

Maura’s inner dialogue had me laughing and also portrayed such accuracy for dating in the mid twenties- slightly awkward and sarcastic demeanor. This is for the ones who feel deeply, who find it easy to romanticize moments and people, who are coming to terms with their trauma and aching, who are learning what it really means to heal. This book is for the ones who seek comfort in words with the hope of feeling less alone. The story is told with the perfect mix of emotion and details that allow the reader to sympathize and visualize the situations described in both the characters past and present. The novel raised many questions which will stay with me long after closing the book. For instance, what can we "settlers" learn from people of the First Nations on whose traditional land we now reside? Is there any way we can help to change attitudes even if we can't change history? And what of our own heritage brought to Canada by our ancestors from elsewhere?Dawn Hosmer deconstructs a mystery in “Somewhere in Between” by presenting a main character who bounces between the present and past to solve her own murder.

Somewhere In Between by Donna Milner | Goodreads

As for the term "dead white girl," it could become one of those weighty book club questions. Darla recounts a story, "The Legend of Crow," that her boyfriend Levi Johnny told. There's a reverence for the story as she recalls the carved pendant of a crow Levi wore and later gave to her. And then she thinks he "takes this spirit guide thing way too seriously now." She mixes honour and a love for her boyfriend with a dismissing of his traditions. As the story unfolds, readers are introduced to the O'Dales' daughter, Darla, who communicates from her state of "in-between." These sections are reminiscent of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones in which the young victim speaks from beyond the grave. So, I have a soft spot for any story that uses ghosts/spirits in an interesting way, and Somewhere In Between scratches that itch. The descriptions of the physical beauty of Chilcotin country are so exact, so gorgeous that I wanted to drive up there tomorrow. You can smell the fresh air, hear the wind in the trees, see the sparkling lake waters. But this book is different - it’s genuinely funny (which is such a rarity) but it also has so much heart to it. You find yourself wanting so much happiness for both characters & you believe they DESERVE this happiness. I won this book from a Caitlin Press giveaway, and was pretty happy about it because I love reading books set in Canada. This one is set in the Cariboo country of northern BC, and it evokes that landscape and culture really well (having lived there for several years I had firsthand knowledge of the area).
