Wainwright, Alfred (2005). A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, Western Fells. Frances Lincoln. ISBN 0-7112-2460-9. Round pencils are sleek, easy to grip, and good for learning. Over long drawing sessions, however, artists may find round pencils difficult to handle due to hand moisture. Pencil grips can alleviate this issue. These two substances are used by pencil makers in various degrees to determine the texture of a graphite pencil.

Graphite pencils are labeled with letters and numbers with each letter and number signifying specific effects. Different grades showcase different degrees of hardness and will produce different types of marks. As the hardness or softness of a lead influences its strength and smoothness, moving up and down the scales can lead to a comprehensive range of effects.

As soon as the graphite rod gets blunt, you can sharpen the pencil by cutting away a certain section of the wooden casing, and the pencil is ready to be used again. However, a pencil is a disposable writing or drawing tool, and as soon as the pencil becomes too short, you can discard it. An H pencil corresponds to a #4 pencil on the American grading system, which places it a few spots further up the hardness scale over a #2 pencil. While an H pencil will create lighter lines than the more common #2 pencil, it is possible to create lines that are moderately dark by using a lot of pressure. If you like to have a detailed sketch done before you do a finished drawing or painting, an H pencil can work very well for you. It’s still a hard graphite lead, but it’s softer and can be used to create darker lines than other hard pencils. Choose a sheet of paper. While any paper will do in a pinch, using a smoother paper will give you more precise control as you add graphite to create values.

However, do factor in the three simple things while working: Pressure placed on the pencil, the texture of the paper and how you go about doing it. The charcoal pencil is made entirely of charcoal and can create high contrast and rich tones, better than the graphite pencil. However, it smudges fairly easily and is a lot more abrasive on your paper than the graphite pencil, and is a lot more brittle. This type of pencil is perfect for writing as it is very easy just to wipe off the charcoal from your paper if you make a mistake. With this grade of pencil, the number indicates the softness of the pencil. This means the higher the number of the B-grade pencil, the softer it will be. Therefore, the 5B grade pencil will be softer than a 4-grade pencil. This particular grade pencil makes darker lines and marks on your paper, and it can be used in various types of applications, but the most common is drawing and note-taking. HB pencils, B pencils, and H pencils are all different forms of graphite pencils labeled with letters and numbers with each letter and number signifying different degrees of hardness or softness. Golf pencils are usually short (a common length is 9cm or 3.5in) and very cheap. They are also known as library pencils, as many libraries offer them as disposable, leak-proof – if it doesn't have ink, it can't leak – writing instruments. The B-grade pencils can produce darker lines than the F and H-grade pencils, and you can easily erase the lines without putting in much effort. The ability of the B-grade pencil to produce darker lines is because they are much softer and as such, they can leave darker graphite lines on your paper. These B-grade pencils are ideal for taking notes and doodling. These are also ideal types of drawing pencils. Copying pencils (or indelible pencils) are graphite pencils with an added dye that creates an indelible mark. They were invented in the late 19th century for press copying and as a practical substitute for fountain pens. Their markings are often visually indistinguishable from those of standard graphite pencils, but when moistened their markings dissolve into a coloured ink, which is then pressed into another piece of paper. They were widely used until the mid-20th century when ball pens slowly replaced them. In Italy their use is still mandated by law for voting paper ballots in elections and referendums.
