Description

Even if the budget had somehow allowed for the stretch of animating the two episodes (it doesn’t – Richard Bignell’s been clear enough about that. A Ed’s Note: You all can hear me screaming excitedly about script headers and dialogue amendments from here, can’t you? Rehearsal Film - A short, silent colour 8mm film shot by Carole Ann Ford on the last day of studio reharsal.

Season 2 is the biggest release yet – a limited edition nine disc box set from the early years of the programme, which sees William Hartnell’s First Doctor take centre-stage. The film has unfortunately been double exposed, but is still a unique record of the making of 1960s Doctor Who. Despite the fact that these episodes were created on a shoestring budget, churned out fairly quickly and shot almost as live television, many aspects of them are just as attention grabbing and fun as they were almost 60 years ago.The comfortable back and forth as seen through the first and second season especially is a testament to the superb writing as well as its lead actors. It successfully introduces a new companion, features an impressive looking alien creature and delivers an unexpected twist. As well as how they exploded across the realms of popular culture in the form of toys, comics, films and stage shows. Debuting later this year this collection is the biggest release yet and features a limited edition nine-disc box.

The entire story comes across as a bit of a mish-mash, but then again, it is a chase across space and time. Six new episodes with companions Maureen O’Brien, Peter Purves, Carole Ann Ford, Janet Fielding (Tegan), Wendy Padbury (Zoe), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Bonnie Langford (Melanie) and Sophie Aldred (Ace).

As for the adventures themselves, the production teams of the day created without a doubt some of the most imaginative and ingenious work ever done on television. Packed with special features including a look back with key cast, more “Behind The Sofa” episodes, cast and crew profiles, and more! This documentary presented by the eternally fabulous Toby Hadoke tries to uncover a key contributor to the early success of Doctor Who; David Whitaker.
