and could not be prouder to present our 50th-anniversary edition of the greatest science fiction novel of all time, newly reset and featuring this glorious new artwork, to a new generation of readers. And in a highly advanced world with no thinking machines, Dune examines in some detail what would replace them.

The spice Melange … does everything from increasing a person’s lifespan to making interstellar travel possible … and whoever controls the spice controls the universe. After all, attempting murder in a world full of Sherlocks is, as Harkonnen himself puts it, a matter of “plans within plans within plans”. He is best known for creating the world of DUNE, which became the bestselling science fiction novel of all time. In many ways it is an indictment on the progress we, as a society, have made in the last 56 years, that each of these themes is as acutely relevant in 2021 as it was in 1965. In 2017 the matching edition of Dune Messiah arrived, but it looked like the project had stalled because there were no dates for the rest. Also included is an illuminating afterword by Brian Herbert, son of the author, who has penned several best-selling novels that expand the Dune universe. Paul in particular loses more and more of his human traits as, under the mind-altering influence of Arrakis’s spice, he turns into a dispassionate machine observing possible futures and strategising to avoid a specific one. A third film adaptation directed by Denis Villeneuve is scheduled to be released on October 1, 2021. This collector’s edition of Frank Herbert’s phenomenal tale of far-future desert warriors, fallible messiahs and interplanetary intrigue is illustrated by award-winning artist Sam Weber, and published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the world’s best-selling science-fiction title.

This much anticipated edition is illustrated by Sam Weber, whose work also appears in the acclaimed Folio editions of Fahrenheit 451 and Lord of the Flies .

Even now, half a century since it first appeared in 1965, Dune is certainly still ‘the one’ – it continues to top readers’ polls as the greatest science-fiction novel of modern times. I know this is pretty petty and I'm not sure if most people here care about the quality of print, but I recently bought this version of the Dune 50th Anniversary Edition by Hodder Publishing for a reread as it has been about 12 years since I last read it and I wanted to get a refresher before the movies come out. Others in Leto’s close circle of advisors include the logical, Mr Spock-like ‘Mentat’ and assassin Thufir Hawat, the troubadour swordmaster Gurney Halleck, and the sensitive Dr Wellington Yueh. Dune is a 1965 science-fiction novel by American author Frank Herbert, originally published as two separate serials in Analog magazine. While the first book has a good balance of action and politics, Messiah has a more slow burn political thriller as we see Paul Atritedes crowned as Emperor and his allies ruling the Imperium and dealing with the enemies. The Frank Herbert Dune Series Collection is a captivating set of six books that delves into a rich and complex science fiction universe.
