I asked Nichols if 2C-B could be a good alternative to MDMA or psilocybin in psychedelic-assisted therapy, and he says that “no one knows.” He explains the pharmacology is different, that 2C-B is actually closer to psilocybin than MDMA, “but [2C-B] might be useful as an adjunct to psychotherapy in the way MDMA is used.” That’s also an idea that Joe Moore also posed to me during our conversation. “You’re getting something like MDMA, but not having a hangover. I think that the therapeutic implications are pretty big.”

You have to read the book to fully appreciate what he has done for science, for the appreciation of sympathomimetic amines that we have today. The "Essential Amphetamines" are what Shulgin describes as ten amphetamines that differ from natural products such as safrole or myristicin by an amine group ( PIHKAL Entry #157 TMA). The list consists of:and here's where my questions come in. pretty much every human culture already has a history with psychoactive plants, from ayahuasca to psilocybin to ibogaine to peyote, etc. that already seems like a lot to be going on with, for me, in terms of therapeutic psychedelics. but ok, he's into nuanced effects, I guess he's seeing a future where psychedelics could be diagnostic tools for various mental illnesses as well as medicines matched to particular issues. but I have to question exactly what he and his fellow travelers accomplished in their own lives through their prolific psychedelic use. on the one hand, there is the purely recreational aspect that they all get caught up in depending on the chemical they take. looking at the trails and other visuals, experiencing enhanced tastes, listening to music, looking at patterns behind their eyes, enjoying greatly expanded color vision, feeling euphoric, having stoned sex. this all gets treated as a pleasurable byproduct of the larger quest but particularly for his pals, judging from the notes, this seems to be a major draw. there are many many notes about "not insightful but a delightful day with colors and music". I just feel like this more recreational and hedonistic aspect of psychedelics gets really swept under the rug, like of course their purpose is more noble and healthful and not just like a bunch of hippies getting high at concerts. just because you're listening to classical music and not the grateful dead doesn't somehow make you more noble. Benzodiazepines - Depending on the dose, benzodiazepines can slightly to completely reduce the intensity of the cognitive, physical, and visual effects of a 2C-B trip. They are very efficient at stopping "bad trips" at the cost of amnesia and reduced trip intensity. Caution is advised when acquiring them for this purpose due to their high abuse and addiction potential.

Nausea - Mild to extreme nausea is reported when consumed in moderate to high dosages and either passes once the user has vomited or gradually fades by itself as the peak sets in. In 1994, two years after PIHKAL was published, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) raided Shulgin's lab and requested that he turn over his DEA license. Richard Meyer, spokesman for DEA's San Francisco Field Division, has stated in reference to PIHKAL "It is our opinion that those books are pretty much cookbooks on how to make illegal drugs. Agents tell me that in clandestine labs that they have raided, they have found copies of those books," suggesting that the publication of PIHKAL and the termination of Shulgin's license may have been related. [1] Notable compounds [ edit ] Essential amphetamines [ edit ] Because there’s so many anecdotal reports that 2C-B has relatively few negative side effects, there’s some speculation that it could be a reasonable choice (or alternative to MDMA) in psychedelic-assisted therapy. And although it was used by some therapists before it was outlawed in the mid-Nineties, the research into its safety and application is scant. And... sorry, I just couldn't hold myself. Quotes really do a better job at reviewing themselves than I ever could.WARNING: Always start with lower doses due to differences between individual body weight, tolerance, metabolism, and personal sensitivity. See responsible use section. B was first synthesised by Alexander Shulgin in 1974 and his findings were reported in his 1991 book entitled PiHKAL. Following its discovery, there was some reported use of 2C-B by psychotherapists in the 1970s, which was followed by a breakthrough of use into the recreational drug scene in the 70s and 80s. 2C-B had a short-lived legitimate history and was marketed as an aphrodisiac in smart shops in America and the Netherlands, before being classified as illegal in several countries, including the UK, in the 90s. TiHKAL is divided into two parts. The first part, for which all rights are reserved, begins with a fictionalized autobiography and then continues with a collection of essays on topics ranging from psychotherapy and the Jungian mind to the prevalence of DMT in nature, ayahuasca, and the War on Drugs. The second part of TiHKAL, which may be conditionally distributed for non-commercial reproduction, is a detailed synthesis manual for 55 psychedelic compounds (many discovered by Alexander Shulgin himself), including their chemical structures, dosage recommendations, and qualitative comments. phen-ethyl-amine \fen-'eth-al-a-,men\ n. This is the online version of the second half of the book “PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story” by Alexander and Ann Shulgin. Decreto 299/2010: Actualización de la lista de estupefacientes y demás sustancias químicas que deberán ser incluidas en losalcances de la Ley Nº 23.737" (PDF) (in Spanish). February 3, 2010 . Retrieved December 10, 2019. MDMA - MDMA strongly amplifies the physical, visual, and cognitive effects of 2C-B. This combination is reported to produce strong sensations of euphoric pleasure manifested through distinct body highs, headspaces and uniquely colorful visuals. The synergy between these substances is unpredictable, and it is advised to start with markedly lower doses than one would take for both substances individually. This combination may increase the neurotoxic effects of MDMA, based on its similarity to LSD, which has been found to increase MDMA neurotoxicity. [16] Our human bodies and our human brains have evolved in such a way that we cannot see the full scope of what our universe and our reality actually looks like. Instead, we see what we need to survive on the earth and what we need to procreate. That’s it. However, there were sections of the book that were actually quite boring and I didn't care about. The sections I didn't care about were generally their life adventures, because it wasn't really about drugs and not what I was looking for, a chapter that is basically just a list of where DMT is naturally occurring in nature, and a chapter about a vivid dream that was brought on by drugs. I just didn't care.As literature PIHKAL and TIHKAL are unusual for their hybridity. Some of the best postwar writing has been that which has managed to span the chasm between art and science, as in Primo Levi's The Periodic Table. The Shulgins' two big books span autobiography, organic chemistry, politics, ethnobotany and psychopharmacology. Their cultural impact is likely to be profound in the coming decades. A minor flaw is that while both books have an index for chemical compounds, neither has a general index: an oversight, especially given their great length.

B was discovered in 1974 by the American chemist Alexander Shulgin, who was investigating psychedelic phenethylamines derived from mescaline. [2] [3] TIHKAL: The Continuation is a 1997 book written by Alexander Shulgin and Ann Shulgin about a family of psychoactive drugs known as tryptamines. A sequel to PIHKAL: A Chemical Love Story, TIHKAL is an acronym that stands for "Tryptamines I Have Known and Loved". Smaller doses (under 15 mg) are reported to be useful as a sensory and aesthetic enhancer (in a manner somewhat similar to MDMA) while larger doses are reported to produce a distinct mind-manifesting psychedelic effect.

#20 2C-B

How I rate this book is on a scale of 0 to awesome. But that doesn't mean it is without flaws or strangeness. Nitrous - Nitrous oxide is commonly used in combination with psychedelics. The two are known to possess powerful cross-synergistic effects, including the capacity to send the user directly into an "ego death" state. The speed and intensity with which this occurs are very rapid and the euphoria that can result often leads to the urge to compulsively redose. Brazil: 2C-B is illegal to possess, produce and sell in Brazil as it is listed on Portaria SVS/MS nº 344. [25] Anecdotal evidence suggests that there are no negative health effects attributed to simply trying it by itself at low to moderate doses or using it very sparingly (although nothing can be completely guaranteed).
