Without going into detail, and making it clear that they are two different worlds, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 has some of the features that made the Californian watch so popular, and it is also cheaper. There are those who will still prefer to buy the Apple Watch Series 7, especially those loyal to the brand, but what is clear is that this, along with its Pro version, is the most advanced Android smartwatch so far. Numerous Health Functions Running Wear OS 3, both Google and Samsung are still finding their feet in the wider smartwatch space. The operating system is richer when it comes to apps and features than those of the semi-smartwatch competition like the Huawei GT 3, but you don't quite get the polish Apple's watchOS brings to the table.

Both smartwatches are built with Super AMOLED display for strength and durability. However, the Galaxy Watch5 models are among our strongest smartwatches, as they are designed with Sapphire Crystal Glass that allows you to continue your journey to a healthier you without worrying about damaging your watch. Galaxy Watch5 boasts a super-tough sapphire crystal glass, AMOLED display, an elegant slimline casing, and integrated sports band for a comfortable fit. It even has a long-lasting battery life and 16GB internal memory, so there’s plenty of space for all your favourite motivational songs.Galaxy Watch5 has a water resistance rating of 50 meters under the ISO standard 22810:2010. It is not suitable for diving or high-pressure water activities. If the device or your hands are wet, they must be dried thoroughly prior to handling.

However, aside from that, the experience here has been largely the same as that I enjoyed roughly a year ago with the Galaxy Watch 4. With even last year’s chipset making a return, there are no speed improvements to be found when using the software. Testing conducted by Samsung in June 2022 using pre-released version of Galaxy Watch 5 (BT & LTE), each paired to a Samsung phone; all devices tested with prerelease software, Galaxy Watch Magnetic Fast Charging USB C Cable (EP-OR900), and Samsung 25W USB C Power Adapter (EP-TA800). Charge time varies with region, settings, usage pattern and environmental factors; actual results may vary. The Galaxy Watch5 must be paired with a Samsung Galaxy phone with Android 8.0 and minimum 1.5GB RAM. It’s really impressive tech that ensures I’ll be wearing the Galaxy Watch 5 long after writing this review – or at least until I can get my sleeping pattern how it should be. The Watch5 Pro comes in one strap size and is made with titanium. Whereas the Watch5 comes in two sizes: 40mm & 44mm and is made with aluminum.

Both premium smartwatches have a round Super AMOLED display available up to 46mm. But the Galaxy Watch5 Pro truly stands the test of time with the built in Sapphire Crystal Glass. What’s more, the Galaxy Watch4 Classic has up to 40 hours usage time, whereas the Galaxy Watch5 Pro can last up to twice as long with up to 80 hours of usage. For best results in detecting and recording snoring, place your smartphone on a stable surface near your head with the bottom of the smartphone pointed to your head. The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 44mm offers a 1.36-inch always-on AMOLED display, a 410mAh battery, 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, weighing 33.5g. The 40mm version is no less impressive. Its 1.19-inch display is smaller, but there's the same amount of RAM (1.5GB) and the same amount of onboard storage space (16GB). It's also a touch lighter, weighing 28.7g. Both watches are compatible with smartphones running Android 8.0 or above with Google Mobile Services (GMS) and RAM 1.5GB or above.

Battery time is based on our own laboratory measurements, and may vary depending on factors such as device settings, usage patterns and operating conditions. That said, when I enabled the always-on display and SpO2 monitoring, the Galaxy Watch 5 lasted closer to 30 hours in my testing. Though I usually prefer AOD, for extending the Galaxy Watch 5's battery life, it seemed worthwhile to turn it off.

Sensor-wise, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro can collect a smorgasbord of data with Samsung’s single BioActive Sensor, which measures optical heart rate, electrical signals and bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure body composition. While we love how Samsung has opened up its Watch family to choice, there's no getting around the fact that the whole experience just feels way more fragmented than Apple's watchOS, and when you scratch the surface, more confusing too.
