Als ik begin met lezen merk ik hoe gemakkelijk de schrijfstijl leest. Het voorwoord geeft al weer hoe de schrijver geïnspireerd is door zijn werk als zenpriester om dit boek te schrijven. De gekozen bewoording voelt toegankelijk, geen ingewikkelde bewoording en komt open en oprecht over. Bovendien zijn de metaforen en omschrijvingen met regelmaat zo mooi dat ik het helemaal voor me zie en voel. Subjects including eating, not-thinking meditations, Zen gardens and meditations, on cleaning and owning less, breathing style, appreciating nature, cultivating a right attitude and being positive, and so on. I do think that some of this writing has been done with Japanese audience in mind, but it easy to apply even if you’re not. Of course, not all chapters may feel like you can apply them to your life, but even so I feel that most would. The chapters are short, so one could easily use this book for daily-chapter reading. But you also have to learn to love cooking and make cooking a habit. You also have to have that moment when you realize that cooking well, and caring about what you're cooking, and caring about knowing how to cook the ingredients you now care about, becomes about as meaningful and rewarding a way to spend your time on earth as us lowly humans can hope for.
