We support each writers’ unique research process as they navigate the emerging world of their play, often working with specialist partners in the area of criminal justice they choose to explore.

It felt impossible, and that really appealed as a challenge,” says Birch, who is softly spoken, has a tattoo of a slice of watermelon on her wrist and is given to understatement. Now 33, she started out in theatre in her twenties but has branched out into television and film of late, making her debut with an award-winning screenplay for Lady Macbeth starring Florence Pugh in 2016, followed by a role as Story Editor on Succession. Her next, keenly awaited, project is a 12-part adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People for the BBC. The Orange Tree Young Company present [BLANK] by Alice Birch as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival 2018. It will also be playing at our Connections partner theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, at the end of May. Jones, Alice (2019-10-16). Cavendish, Dominic (16 June 2015). "We Want You to Watch, National Theatre, review: 'random, incomprehensible and plain bad' ". The Daily Telegraph. ISSN 0307-1235 . Retrieved 17 March 2020. Birch's opera, Violet, composed by Tom Coult , was scheduled to open at the Aldeburgh Festival in June 2020. [53] [54] The opera was commissioned and produced by Music Theatre Wales, Theater Magdeburg, and Snape Maltings, with the London Sinfonietta. [55] The two created Violet in 2019. [56] The opera's premiere was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, [57] eventually taking place at Aldeburgh in June 2022. Jude Christian's production starred soprano Anna Dennis as Violet with accompaniment by the London Sinfonietta conducted by Andrew Gourlay. [58] The production went on to tour the UK. [59] Coult’s score received an Ivor Novello Award nomination at The Ivors Classical Awards 2023 for Best Stage Work. [60] Your adaptation of Dead Ringers , with Rachel Weisz, featured very visceral birth scenes, and your forthcoming film, The End We Start From , is about a mother ( Jodie Comer ) with a newborn navigating a climate disaster. What draws you to those extremes?

One of the arresting things about Revolt was that it was a play, above all, about language: how the words men and women use with each other shape their relationships and society at large. For all its satirical punch, it was a kind of manifesto for how we might treat one another more kindly and equally. She looks thoughtful. “For me it’s the whole job, language – those are the tools. It’s quite old-fashioned. I take it really seriously.” It should be a moment of moral conflict but somehow that does not quite happen. Eventually the scene terminates with what might be a child actor’s favourite role. One of the little girls comes out with a baseball bat, stands on a chair and smashes up the dinner table, fattoush salad and all.

In 2018, Birch adapted Marguerite Duras' novella La Maladie de la Mort (or, in English, The Malady of Death) for the stage. [44] The play premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that year and was directed by Katie Mitchell. [45] Near the end of the interview she finally shrugs off the jumper. I suddenly see she’s pregnant. This really will be a big year. When is she due? “Not long now, 8 March.” She laughs. “ International Women’s Day. It’s great.”

In 2015, Birch developed the play We Want You to Watch with the feminist theatre company RashDash. We Want You to Watch was commissioned by the National Theatre. [21] The play protests the violent and graphic world created by pornography and raises the idea of getting rid of pornography in its entirety. [22] The same year, her play for children, The Lone Pine Club, premiered as a touring production. Birch adapted the story from Malcolm Saville's children's books.
