This, I have to say, is also the first in the series that I can remember ending in a definite cliffhanger ... I wasn't a fan of Simon Scarrow's writings before, though several years ago, I did read the third book of his Eagles of the Empire series, 'Where The Eagle Hunts', where his protagonists Cato and Macro are assisted in their mission by a young Boudica. I often wondered reading that whether their paths would cross again with her during the events that made Boudica a synonymous figure in British history...Well now that moment has arrived, I knew I had to read this novel, set in one of the events of British history I know so well... Macro has been close friends with Cato since Cato saved his life in the first book. This bond deepens when Macro confesses that he is illiterate and asks Cato's help in learning to read, and so maintain his position as an officer.

Death to the Emperor is a captivating book full of heroism and sacrifice that brings Boudica and the Iceni vividly to life. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series. I read a lot of roman story writers Anthony Riches, SJA Turney and they all say you can only work with actual real life people who were in the provinces at the time. This novel mirrors that approach, with the larger bulk of this following Macro and his adventures in Londinium and in the veterans colony of Camulodunum (which I've just found out is Colchester, and the first Roman Capital of the province) before the two principal characters finally reunite circa - again - three quarters of the way into the story. As of 12 March 2018 Scarrow has sold over 4 million copies of the books within Eagles of the Empire in English alone. [1] Cover illustrations [ edit ]Simon Scarrow’s twentieth book in the series featuring Centurion Macro and his friend Cato sees the focus turn to Britannia, as Macro, now retired, joins his mother in Londinium. Boudicca: a young British noblewoman, who Macro becomes smitten with in the third novel, When the Eagle Hunts. Storytelling is as ever of a superb quality, its a fast-paced Roman adventure in Britannia, and where all characters come vividly to life to capture the reader from start to finish.

In 2021, Scarrow authored an immersive audiovisual walking tour for the Roman Colosseum entitled Blood and Sand on the BARD EUM mobile app. [3] Books [ edit ]Macro has been discharged from the army and is set on retiring to a place he knows well - Britannia. With his half share of an inn in Londinium and the prospect of a plot of land to build a home, things look good for the former centurion. But things are not what they seem in this part of the empire. The local tribes are unsettled and a group of gangs are causing problems for anyone who owns a business. This includes Macro and his inn. It’s simple, they what a cut of your profits and if you don’t pay there will be consequences. This is another enjoyable read in the series, although I did miss the presence of macro for large swathes of the novel (good news, though: it looks like he's returning in the next instalment). I have to wonder, though, was Apollonius being written as his replacement ...?

Things have changes since then, however - Macro is now retired from the legions, whereas Cato (originally Macro's optio) now outranks him and now has a family of his own to look after. Cato and Macro series, otherwise known as Eagle series is a book series written by Simon Scarrow. This book series focuses on the history of ancient Rome, from around AD 42, but specifically on the experiences and adventures of two major characters of the book, Quintus Licinius Cato and Lucius Cornelius Macro, in their military and political world. Lavinia appears in the first two books and is the lover of both Cato and Vitellius. She is a slave-girl who is owned by Flavia, Vespasian's wife. In The Eagle's Conquest she betrays Cato and unwittingly helps Vitellius try to assassinate the Emperor. However, when the plot fails Vitellius kills both her and the assassin to cover himself. In the first novel, he is only seventeen years of age, tall and gawky, and so weak-looking that many of the officers, including Macro, place bets on how long it will be before he quits, or is killed. The Emperor grants Cato an immediate commission as a Centurion, but because of his age, Vespasian makes him an optio as a compromise, which causes the officers and his fellow recruits to resent him further. He is however, extremely determined and proves the officers wrong throughout the series. Cato attains the rank of Centurion at the end of When the Eagle Hunts and during the events of Centurion, he is promoted to acting prefect of the Second Illyrian. Halfway through The Gladiator Cato is promoted to the rank of tribune for his mission to Egypt, temporarily outranking Macro, but at the end of the book he is awarded a temporary rank of prefect. In The Legion Cato joins a legion in Egypt and receives a temporary promotion to Senior Tribune. The Honour of Rome again ponitless perhaps a book could have been written on the rebellion in Brigantia in 58 AD.Scarrow, Simon (2021). Honour of Rome. [S.l.]: HEADLINE BOOK PUBLISHING. Cato is the son of an Imperial Freedman (former slave) in direct service of Emperor Claudius. Being born a slave himself, and the property of the state, he was given an opportunity by the Emperor as a favour to Cato's late father to enlist in the legions and be given his freedom. Cato has lived a relatively luxurious life as a slave within the Imperial palace, in comparison to the rank and file of the legions, and after accepting the Emperor's offer. he joins the Second Augustan as Macro's Optio. A solid book, well written, quite good plot, classic Scarrow quality, but still it made me feel frustrated, and here is why. Jonathan wrote, produced & directed his first feature film SUMMER RAIN (released on DVD in 2006). It won three Best Film Awards and several other awards for acting; photography as well as numerous nominations at film festivals around the world. What follows is a typical adventure but with Apollonius partly taking Macro’s place. I really like his character and enjoy how Scarrow creates individual personalities, especially with Apollonius being more morally ambiguous than the others. I did miss Cato and Macro’s banter but Apollonius and the other characters make up for it, and was particularly sad that Paulinus was killed off. This is the twentieth book in the Eagles of the Empire Series, and as usual an excellent read. Full of great characters and with a real sense of life in the Roman Empire.
