However, there will be a fanbase that wants the show added to their Lord of the Rings DVD collection they already have, so eventually brining the series to DVD would be a positive move. I'd love to hear about any other ideas people have for this script, but I'm really happy with the resulting video. That was a huge gift from Director Peter Jackson who delivered an extra 168 minutes of pure joy to LOTR fans shortly after the first DVDs of the theatrical versions were released. For the week that ended on March 13th, it's déjà vu as Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's The Croods: A New Age topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the third week in a row, once again topping Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's . It was interesting going back and revisiting these films because I realized how inconsistent they were,” Jackson says in the six-minute video, “and that’s really due to how the Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot. Once they reach the Elvish realm of Rivendell the Hobbits form part of the anti-Sauron fellowship, which includes Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Boromir (Sean Bean), elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and of course Gandalf.Together they must battle across Middle Earth to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom, the fiery chasm in the centre of Mordor. Available on 12/1/2020, here’s what you get in the new Ultra HD package: All three films, with both the Theatrical Cut and Extended Edition versions, newly-remastered by Jackson in 4K resolution, which—as you’ll learn below—means better detail, better color, and better contrast than any version you’ve seen before. But here’s the more important thing: Whereas on the previous Blu-ray there were many VFX shots where the CG backgrounds and creatures didn’t quite match well with the live action footage in terms of color and contrast—thus making it more obvious that they were indeed effects shots—the state of the art in image grading technology today means that those elements are now perfectly blended together in 4K and HDR. Pictures would release its entire 2021 film slate directly to HBO Max raised questions about the future of the theatrical experience, it also made clear to film lovers that having a quality home entertainment setup is more essential than ever.

The character of Gollum, created with a pioneering combination of mo-cap performance and CG animation, is astonishing. The detail of flames lighting the dark caverns of Moria as Gandalf fights Durin's Bane demonstrate detail regained in wider shots as well as the improved dynamic range. Unfortunately, given the realities of COVID and the costs of actually getting people in the same room together, they’re virtual—produced over Zoom, with each of the participants in their own window. These sets were notable for their incredible bounty of behind-the-scenes special features, including audio commentaries and an elaborate series of documentaries and galleries collectively known as The Appendices, which were produced by Michael Pellerin. Note that this should be in 16x9 widescreen, but instead it’s been incorrectly authored in squeezed 4x3.The first film in the Trilogy could be likened to the original Star Wars movie in its modesty, but unlike the happy ending in ‘A New Hope’ the ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ leaves viewers with a dark cliffhanger, and in that respect may be better compared to ‘The Empire Strikes Back. What follows is truly epic battle in which the fate of both Middle-earth and the Quest of the Ring-bearer hang in the balance. Optional subtitles are available in English for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, French, Dutch, and Spanish only—again strange because the Fellowship: Theatrical Cut disc includes a lot more (see above). But please, before you watch LOTR in 4k or 4k with HDR, switch to movie or film mode on your Ultra HD TV. This was literally the first look anyone outside the production was given of The Lord of the Rings films at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May of 2001, shortly before the first teaser trailer for The Fellowship of the Ring was released by New Line online (about a week later).

Meanwhile, Aragorn and company enter the horse realm of Rohan, whose king has fallen under Saruman’s spell. Given the fact that I’ve reviewed all of these films multiple times on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD in the past, I’ll refer you to the previous reviews (linked above ad nauseam). That set is expected to include the same 4K movie discs coming on 12/1, with the same Hobbit Blu-rays already available (the movies only, not the extras), and newly-produced Lord of the Rings Blu-rays upgraded with better image quality from this new 4K remaster (those remastered Lord of the Rings Blu-rays will also be available separately next year, in honor of the 20th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring). Once again, don’t forget that in addition to the films, you also get a Movies Anywhere Digital Copy code, which should be good for all three films in both versions in 4K. There are also some shots you can find quips about, for example some of the forced perspective (used to make the Hobbit actors look smaller than other characters) does look a bit odd in today’s standards. For separate evaluations of each film's new Dolby Atmos audio mix, please see their individual listings.

Jackson admits the three LOTR films were very inconsistent in terms of film process (the color timing in ‘Fellowship’ was analog while the sequels were done digitally), but with today’s technology they were able to be made more consistent throughout, including the extended footage. Lastly, I added the two qp files to the process, which remove the pause in the middle of the movie (where you'd switch from Disc One to Disc Two). Either way, you’ll need to keep your previous Blu-rays if you wish to retain all of The Appendices and other bonus content. The director doesn’t regard The Hobbit films as some lark — they’re the preamble to the beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. So if you’ve read somewhere (in some unruly discussion forum online) that DNR has somehow “Ruined the 4K remasters! We’re told that it will, however, include one new piece of bonus content that’s still yet to be determined. And for hundreds of thousands of movie lovers, there's always that one movie or series that triggers our bank account to take the plunge.
