The Glass Room is the fifth book in Ann Cleeves' Vera Stanhope series - now the major ITV detective drama Vera, starring Brenda Blethyn. The Vera Stanhope novels are positioned somewhere between the second and third of these categories; it's obvious from the cast of characters that they have a foot firmly in the procedural camp, but they are also very clearly puzzles. It's also the twentyfifth novel of Ann Cleeves' writing career, which - together with much else - embraces the truly excellent Shetland Quartet, a series of four novels featuring the enigmatic Fair Isle-born DI Jimmy Perez. Lust that felt like adultery’ is what Joe is experiencing; it’s causing him to feel desperate and distracting him from the case.

She’s a geography teacher and he’s a restaurateur, though the pandemic has made it really hard to keep a business afloat in the latter industry. A woman was discovered outside the glass-walled “first-floor conservatory” where he was killed with “a knife in her hand. A second murder using a piece of fiction as a template forces Vera to dig even deeper to find the past secrets behind the present-day crimes. He couldn’t imagine Nina Backworth watching old episodes of The Simpsons and laughing with him at the same jokes. DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but her hippy neighbors keep her well-supplied in homebrew and conversation, and somehow bonds have formed.Cleeves ( Murder in My Backyard ) allows her respect for the traditional mystery to fossilize her writing into a formula. it's not as good as the other Vera's (for my taste) but it's still brilliant as is all of Ann Cleeves work. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. AC, as usual, creates vivid imagery around the setting and includes interesting character interactions and internal dialogue along the way.

If, after reading the book, you disagree with any of my meanderings, I'd much appreciate your comments - to which I promise to reply.

So it was back to working the boring stuff, the pathetic druggies and the drug brawls, just when she’d thought there might be something more exciting to sustain her interest. There are times when the TGR becomes introspective and slow, but gradually the pace and intrigue picks up after 30%, or so. She leaves behind no memories worth keeping: her husband is dead, her boss has made no bones about disliking her, and she’s looking forward to new responsibilities and the higher salary underwritten by North Dakota’s sudden oil boom. Because I enjoy happy endings and want to bring the couple together again, like I’m some great fat Cupid in wellies. In Cleeves’s exquisitely plotted sixth Shetland mystery (after 2013’s Dead Water), bridesmaid Eleanor Longstaff disappears during a wedding ceremony on the island.

Cassandra Dewell can’t leave Montana’s Lewis and Clark County fast enough for her new job as chief investigator for Jon Kirkbride, sheriff of Bakken County. Ann Cleeves is always scrupulously fair in the construction of her plots; clues are seeded throughout the storyline and it's always possible to work out the likely killer - or it would be if we could only identify the clues and realise their significance! has created a masterful though not always likable detective who uses her uncanny knack for crime-solving to identify an unexpected killer. The Glass Room is the fifth book in Ann Cleeves' Vera Stanhope series - which is now a major TV detective drama starring Brenda Blethyn as Vera. A fatal car accident that was anything but accidental has jarred loose a stash of methamphetamines and cash that’s become the center of a battle between the Sons of Freedom, Bakken County’s traditional drug sellers, and MS-13, the Salvadorian upstarts who are muscling in on their territory. And then, when a body is discovered on the balcony outside the Glass Room, Joanna is found in a nearby corridor, clutching a knife .
