Colours: Of course, the range of colours in a set of pencils is an important consideration. However, you don’t want to go overboard if it’s your first set – start with 24 or fewer and work your way up. You can often buy individual pencils from the leading brands to add further range to a small set. In the case of the Cherries reference, I decided that there was enough there to work with to create my artwork. I noted one small change to make to the direction of one of the stems. I decided to draw it pointing to the left rather than the right. This created a pleasing variation in the lines and overall composition. How to create your line drawing When creating your artwork with a Polychromos color pencil, you can rest assured knowing your work is going to last a long time. Of the 120 colors, 102 colors have a 3-star lightfast rating. The pencil has a high archival quality of more than 100 years of fade resistance.

The fine quality of Goldfaber begins with eco-friendly growth from pine wood. The pencil is comprised of pigments and wax, finely-ground and mixed together to create soft and intensive strokes with the vibrant colors we all know and love. Goldfaber is highly pigmented for great lightfastness, and its 3.3mm lead is break-resistant as well as water-resistant and smudge proof. The pencil is labeled by the name Goldfaber, as well as UPC number and color number with its lead color painted at the end of the pencil. If there are simple elements in the piece that need to be changed I’ll do it. On the other hand, if there’s a significant amount of changes required, then I’ll take reference shots all over again, noting the changes I need to make. If you are brand new to art and don't feel comfortable creating your line drawing, feel free to use a ruler to get an exact placement for the elements in this piece. Pencils - For this project I used these colors: a violet, dark indigo, alizarin crimson, orange, yellow, may green, white, ivory, and caput mortuum. As a novice, just getting familiar with the art of colouring books for adults. Amazing quality product, easy to mix the colours which are fairly bright and intense. Would recommend to anyone, especially the beginners, as a great motivation tool.” - Elena GoremykinaWhat makes Polychromos so special? The answer is found in the development. Made from premium cedar wood, Polychromos is comprised of vegetable oil, wax, and high-quality pigments. These qualities give the color pencil a buttery smooth color laydown and can be easily blended for layered effects, highlights, and transitions. With a 3.8 mm break-resistant lead, this pencil is also water resistant and smudge proof. The Polychromos pencil is labeled by color name, color number, lightfastness rating, and an SV bonded label, with the lead color painted on the entire barrel of the pencil. The buying decision can also hinge on how you plan to use them. From everyday workhorses that can be used again and again, to beautifully crafted models that might be saved for special works, coloured pencils vary enormously in quality. These cherries have a very glossy type of skin I wanted to use the burnishing technique to be able to show this texture. Finding the best colouring pencils, the ones that feel just right in your hand, ultimately boils down to personal choice. But that’s not to say we can’t nudge you in the right direction with our guide to the leading brands for artists.

Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils are a unique tool in the world of sketching. They are oil based as opposed to being wax based like other pencils, allowing them to blend with solvents, like turpentine or white spirit in a similar way to how you would blend oil paints. The point of the pencil makes a big difference in the layering and burnishing process. So what about pencil burnishers and the different types there are to choose from? Reasons to Burnish Colored Pencil ArtworkThere are several ways to use Polychromos, create multiple soft layers and dimension by building up many layers of colour. The blending is achieved by using the light veils of multiple colour layers. Using a soft touch with this method is essential, holding the pencil at a 40-45 degree angle helps prevent the instinct to use too much pressure. Quality: When it comes to quality, you’re generally looking for pencils with higher proportions of pigment, which should result in richer colours coming off the pencil. Trusted brands are always a good choice in this regard, but don’t be put off if you haven’t heard of a manufacturer before – it might just be better value.

The Goldfaber Color Pencil lives in our Creative Studio line. Not to be overshadowed by Polychromos, Goldfaber is the high-quality choice for the student, aspiring, and hobby artist. With 48 colors to choose from to let your imagination run wild, you will never get bored.

There are some minor complaints with the smaller sets of there not being a good representation of the entire color wheel, however. But with the available blending, you still have plenty of flexibility even in the smaller sets. One thing to remember with Polychromos, is not to rush, take your time to build up layers in an almost meditative concentrated way.

Just know that burnishing and layering go hand in hand. When drawing on a good cotton paper, like Stonehenge paper by Legion, you have the option of building up multiple layers. Sometimes as many as 20 or more layers. If you like the polished look, then use the burnishing technique after you’ve completely rendered. Pencil for line drawing - The lavender color Col-Erase pencil, alternatively you could use an HB graphite pencil, and a kneaded eraser to lift the dark marks and leave just a hint of the outline. The Van Gogh Royal Talens colouring pencil sets – as the name suggests – offer quality that the artist would be proud of. They were part of the very first ASTM tests for lightfastness in coloured pencils and are now the standard that other pencils are judged against, so you can be sure your drawings will last for a very long time. That’s pretty incredible considering the price – the Royal Talens are the least expensive of the ASTM rated pencils out there.

The Polychromos pencil, is made using high quality acid free pigments, each pencil has its own number and name, the round barrel pencil is also coloured to match the pigment of the colour inside. These oil based pencils lay down soft vibrant colour tones, that can be built up with multiple layers without creating a wax shiny bloom, that is apparent in wax pencils. A special process call Secural Bonding, ensures the pencil lead is secured to the cedar wood casing, resulting in high resistance to breakage and great sharpening results. The coloured lead is 3.8mm, with 120 colours to choose from, you won't be short on colour choice. This reasonably priced pencil is our most popular coloured pencil to date. They offer a soft lively colour and are water resistant. Artists use these because of the high grade pigments and lightfastness which means they’ll last for years. The leads are SV bonded which means they’re hardy pencils which can survive transit and are sturdier than your average colouring pencil.
