I started to think of handmade painter pyramids, because I heard someone who asked where to find something like these to buy. I came up with the idea that they are very simple to be done and deserve to be tried as a DIY project. I like to make a prototype to see if I like the final result before making a whole bunch of something. I also come up with improvements or better ways of doing things during the prototyping. But you can skip this part. Prior to my husband sharing how to make my own painter’s stands, I didn’t even know there was such a thing or that you could actually buy them. Maybe you didn’t know either. Today’s DIY Painter’s Pyramid Stands is another one of his ideas that I’m now taking credit for simply by the fact that I’m sharing the tutorial with you. Draw a line across the middle to create two squares, then draw the diagonals of each square to find the middle of each square. With a square, transpose the two centers to the sides of the rectangle so that you can use them as reference. Dimensions might be driven by the scraps available... Dauzats and contemporaries who undertook similar journeys about the same time, including Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (Turkey, 1828), Prosper Marilhat (Egypt, 1831–32), and Eugène Delacroix (Morocco and Algeria, 1832), are generally credited with elevating Orientalist subjects as a popular genre, one that served as a filter through which Europeans visualized and indeed conceptualized the Muslim world for much of the nineteenth century. I chose to cut the pyramid with the circular saw, because I didn’t want to break all the circular saw table settings. I used the circular saw also because the piece I was about to cut would have been small enough for being a huge risk to be caught by the blade and discarded. I marked a sign to make them all at the same length, and I cut the first pyramid. There he showed two related subjects, a painting, Al-Azhar Mosque, Cairo (Assemblée Nationale, Paris), and a drawing, Turkish Café in Alexandria (whereabouts unknown). The present work is signed with the artist’s initials in a form that he used for a short period about 1830 (see Plessier 1990), yet its early history remains untraced, and it was unknown to scholars until it surfaced on the Paris art market in 1983.
